Meeting

The Simpson County School District is governed by an elected five-member Board of Education. Board members are elected for six-year terms. The Board of Education employs the Superintendent of Education to administer the day-to-day operations and programs of the District.

Regular meetings are scheduled by the Board for receiving reports and updates about District operations and activities, completing duties as required by statute and policy, and adopting policies for the governance of the District.

Regular meetings are conducted on the second Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the District Office, 111 Education Lane, Mendenhall, MS 39114.

Special meetings are scheduled as necessary by the Board to discuss and act upon urgent matters. Notice of a special meeting, including the purpose, is posted at the District Office, and on the District's website 24 hours in advance.

Executive Sessions

At any Regular or Special meeting, the Board may proceed into Executive Session at which only persons invited by the Board may be present. No adoption of any proposed policy, position, resolution, rule, regulation or formal action occurs at any Executive Session.

Executive Sessions are held for purposes of discussing property purchases or sales, personnel matters (specific), litigation, security matters, investigations regarding misconduct or violations of the law, school board discussion about problems of students, parents, or teachers.

Public Participation at Board Meetings

The Board of Education recognizes the value of public participation and the importance of public input on school matters of community interests related to the Simpson County School District.

The Board of Education offers public participation during regular meetings to individuals or groups in accordance with the procedure listed below:

  • To be placed on the agenda of a regular board meeting, groups or individuals shall submit through mail, or hand carry, a written request to come before the board to the office of the superintendent at least seven (7) working days prior to the board meeting. Any request not meeting this timeline will be held until the next regular meeting of the board.
  • Individuals or groups may complete the Public Participation at Board Meetings form provided to submit their request to participate during the regular board meeting.

This procedural directive has been adopted to balance the importance of public participation with other important objectives, including but not limited to

  • Ensuring all community members have a reasonable opportunity to express their views to the board
  • Completing board business effectively, efficiently and in an orderly manner
  • Respecting the rights of board members, district staff, students and audience members
